A lab grown diamond is a genuine diamond created in a controlled laboratory environment rather than beneath the earth’s surface. Scientists replicate the extreme heat and pressure that form natural diamonds using one of two methods: Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT).

CVD begins with a thin diamond seed placed in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. The gas is heated until carbon atoms separate and settle onto the seed, building a crystal layer by layer over several weeks. HPHT mimics the geological conditions deep within the earth’s mantle, applying roughly 1.5 million pounds per square inch of pressure at temperatures above 2,700 °F to a carbon source until it crystallizes into diamond.

The result in both cases is a real carbon crystal with the same atomic structure, refractive index, and hardness (10 on the Mohs scale) as any mined diamond. A standard diamond tester cannot tell the difference—because there isn’t one at the molecular level.
